Fidelio, Beethoven’s opera about the triumph of freedom over tyranny, feels incredibly timely at this moment in global geopolitics, making the opera an absolute must-see.
Lise has previously sung the role in London, Montreal and Florence, but this is her first time in New York. Her London performance was described by The Guardian as “phenomenal”. They added “Hers is a great voice, superbly controlled and beautifully equalised throughout its range.” Bachtrack’s reviewer wrote that “Listening to Lise Davidsen is like watching a Roger Federer serve: there’s elegance, grace and apparently effortless fluidity.”
Opera Wire said that “Her soprano is volcanic in its power, molten in its heat and energy, though its force is never bludgeoning nor metallic... It’s first-class singing that makes Beethoven’s unyielding vocal writing sound easy.”
In New York Lise is joined on stage by David Butt Philip as Florestan, Tomasz Konieczny as Don Pizarro, René Pape as Rocco, and Ying Fang and Magnus Dietrich as Marzelline and Jaquino. The conductor is Susanna Mälkki.
